About Jessica den Outer

Jessica den Outer (1996) has an academic background in environmental law and has been involved in the international Rights of Nature movement since 2017. Den Outer shares her message on many platforms and has been invited to speak for the UN Secretary-General, Harvard University, and the Love Tomorrow festival. In the Netherlands she is one of the leading advocates for the Rights of Nature. In 2023 her acclaimed book 'Rights for Nature' (Lemniscaat Publishing) was released, in which she shares the inspiring stories behind international examples of the Rights of Nature. In 2024 she founded the Dutch NGO 'Stichting Rechten van de Natuur', which further drives the citizens’ movement in the Netherlands. Her expertise on laws and policies concerning the Rights of Nature has been consulted worldwide, including in the Netherlands (two bills), Aruba (a constitutional amendment), and Ireland (a referendum). She has received several awards and recognitions for her dedication to nature. In 2019, Den Outer was appointed by the United Nations as one of the youngest experts in this field.
